Hello~ ^-^ Today I wanted to do another post about language learning!
So, I found this new website that has been REALLY helping me with learning Korean. It is called LearnWithOliver and also has a ton of other languages that you can learn on there (so far I have only tried the Korean course).
Basically the way this website works is it has a ton of flashcards with words and sentences and you can set things up to make sure you only get sentences with words you already know. You can also set up how many minutes you do each day and it let’s you know based on the minutes you do each day when you will be fluent. I set it up so I am doing an hour a day and I should be fluent in three years (though I already know a ton of the words obviously, so it will be way sooner than that).
The best thing about this website is that you have the option to turn off all the romanizations. I hate romanizatons because I can read perfectly in Korean and the romanizations are distracting. I would say the only downside to LearnWithOliver is that you have to pay money if you want to listen to the words and sentences being read to you. I don’t mind it myself because Korean is a phonetic language and as long as you can read, you can get the pronunciation right yourself. But I know some people may not like this. Otherwise, the site is completely free and really helpful.
There are also the common apps and websites that I have talked about before.
Duolingo is most commonly used by language learners and I would recommend it, but only for broadening you vocabulary. It can teach you a ton of different words, but isn’t the best at teaching grammar. Plus, once you get to a certain point, it can’t teach you much after that. (I have already finished the Korean course on Duo and there is nothing more it can teach me, but I am still pretty lacking.) So, I think Duolingo is good if you just want the basics and if you want to have more than a casual conversation, then you should find something else.
MangoLanguages is good from what I can remember. I haven’t used it in a while, but I remember one of the perks is that it is connected to the pioneer library system. So, if you have a pioneer library card, you can easily connect it to MangoLanguages and it is free. If I remember correctly, I think I liked this a little better than Duo, but obviously, I don’t use it anymore and I don’t remember why I quit. But in any case, you should check it out.
RocketLanguages is a little intense, so I use it only if I need to know a certain subject really well (for example, if I wanted to know how to order coffee in Korean ((I already do, but anyways)), then I could look up that topic). So, it is very helpful, but trying to do it every single day is just too much for me and I wouldn’t recommend trying to use it that way.
101Languages is awesome, but kind of annoying if you don’t pay for it (which I don’t). Basically it is a bunch of podcasts, PDFs and flashcards that teach you whatever language you are learning, but the podcasts are not free so I just read the PDFs for each podcast. But some podcasts don’t have PDFs so then you are just left in the dark on that lesson and you just have to skip it. It is kinda confusing as far as what is free and what is premium, but they have a ton of stuff on youtube which makes up for the strange website lol. So you can just look up Korean101 (switch out Korean with the language you are learning).
That is about it! I can’t think of anymore websites I have used other than a few that are specifically for Korean. I know I already did a post about this and I think I might have mentioned some of these websites, but I thought I would do it again just cuz. ;P And also, I wanted to rant about LearnWithOliver because I love it.
Alrighty then! Have a nice week and remember to always be yourself because YOU are special. ❤ ^-^
